Why Meaning Alone Cannot Operate the Physical World
Most organisations recognise the value of a Semantic Twin, but many still see the Spatial Twin as little more than an expensive 3D viewer. My latest article challenges that assumption by exploring the hidden “spatial tax” organisations already pay through repeated walkdowns, delays, duplicated surveys, rework and uncertainty. The Spatial Twin is not about visualisation for its own sake; it is the layer that turns semantic understanding into safe, executable work.
Brownfield and Greenfield: Same Destination, Different Route
A comment on my last article challenged the way I had described configuration authority:
“Most of the architecture reads as a sequence. Evidence, then authority, then an authoritative state, then a decision. On an older asset I am not sure it behaves like that. You make a call on what you know, the call sends people out, and what they find reopens the thing you just approved. Does the twin need to be built for that loop rather than for the linear?”
It is an excellent challenge.
Architecture diagrams have a habit of turning learning into a pipeline. Evidence enters at one end, passes through governance and emerges as an approved decision at the other.
Physical operations are rarely that tidy.

“One Asset. One Truth. Many States.” explores what it takes for a Digital Twin to genuinely earn its place as the single source of truth: not by pretending uncertainty and disagreement do not exist, but by making them visible, governed and resolvable through evidence, configuration control and accountable authority.
I hope it continues the conversation—and I look forward to being challenged again.
Why the Spatial Twin is where the Semantic Twin pays back!
Knowledge graphs, 3D models and live telemetry are valuable individually, but they do not create an operational Digital Twin on their own. Real value emerges when the Semantic Twin and Spatial Twin operate in lockstep—connected through shared asset identity, telemetry bindings, business rules, workflows and an event mesh that keeps the model aligned with the physical world.
The Semantic Twin explains what an asset is, how it relates to the wider operation, its current condition, constraints, risks and permitted actions. The Spatial Twin makes that meaning visible and actionable by adding location, geometry, access, proximity, hazardous zones and environmental change. Through a context-driven interface, these capabilities can then be presented to operators, engineers, AI agents, drones and robots at the moment they are needed.
This article explores why the Spatial Twin is where investment in semantic intelligence becomes operational value—and why preventing drift between space, meaning and live state is essential for trusted decision-making in safety-critical environments.
The Next Digital Twin Will Be Spatial, Semantic and Synchronised
Digital twins are entering a new phase.
For years, many organisations have treated digital twins as either a visualisation problem or a data integration problem. One team builds the 3D model. Another builds the dashboard. Another owns the asset hierarchy, historian, work management system, engineering data, inspection records, simulation tools or AI assistant.
Each of these things can be useful. But none of them is enough on its own.
The next generation of digital twins will not be defined by better dashboards or more photorealistic 3D environments. They will be defined by whether an organisation can maintain a live, trusted model of operational reality.
That means connecting three things:
The Spatial Twin — where things are, how they are arranged, and how the physical environment behaves.
The Semantic Twin — what things are, how they relate, what rules apply, and what state they are in.
Telemetry Binding — how live signals from sensors, systems and operations are connected to the correct assets, rules, limits and spatial objects.
The real challenge is not simply building these pieces. It is keeping them synchronised.
